Outspoken and independent, Lady Alexa Bingham enjoys the heady freedom of making all her own decisions, even though the challenges of overseeing her family's country estate are daunting. But when a chance encounter with London's most notorious rake awakens a secret longing for adventure, she accepts her aunt's invitation for a Season in Town . . . only to find that breaking the rules of the ton has serious consequences.
The Earl of Killingworth uses his rakehell reputation to hide the fact that poverty has forced him to work for a living. As the owner of a gambling den and brothel, Connor has no time for glittering ballrooms or innocent young ladies. But after a reckless wager leaves him with a new business partner, he is forced to take a risky gamble . . . Will the cards fall in their favor? Alexa and Connor begin to play a dangerous game of intrigue and deception as they seek to outwit a cunning adversary who wants to put them permanently out of business. But if they are not careful, it is the flames of their own fiery attraction that may destroy them.

Elliott packs the first Lords of Midnight Regency romance with plenty of steamy sex and sly innuendo. Lady Alexa Hendrie is a quiet sort who’s resigned herself to being a bluestocking spinster with a peaceful solitary life, but when she sneaks out for a night on the town and ends up winning a share of the earl of Killingworth’s brothel and gambling den, she finds herself in circumstances that are anything but relaxed. Lord Connor is poor and desperate, but acquiring such a devilishly attractive and woefully inexperienced business partner may be too great a risk even for him. As Alexa and Connor flee London to escape vengeful criminals, their mutual attraction sizzles beneath delightful banter. Regency fans will especially appreciate the authentic feel of the historical setting.

It isn't as if Connor Linsley, the Irish Wolfhound, doesn't have enough trouble trying to discover who is attempting to run him out of business. Now he has to deal with a new partner, Lady Alexa Hendrie, who simply refuses to give up the share in the Wolf's Lair she won in a game of cards. And it isn't as if Connor hasn't tried explaining to Alexa that proper ladies don't engage in trade (especially not in a combination gaming hall and brothel); the annoying woman will simply not listen to reason. Even when Connor's enemies take a more deadly approach to resolving their issues with him, Alexa refuses to budge from his side. All of which means Connor, the most notorious rake in town, may have finally met his match. A surprisingly resourceful heroine and a sinfully sexy hero, a compelling and danger-spiced plot, lushly sensual love scenes, and lively writing work together perfectly to get Elliott's new Regency-set Lords of Midnight series off to a delightfully entertaining start.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
